Melissa Mercier: Perfectly Private – 2

I was reading a very interesting article analysing the ‘Instagram obsession’ and the nostalgia that comes with it. Some people are dubbing the application “the Auto-Tune of photography”. Others say that it is tapping into the sense “that a photograph is itself a precious object”. I find this statement quite intriguing as artist like myself spend our entire career trying to convince the world of exactly that.

I use instagram quite a bit, but never for ‘serious’ work. What I mean by this is that I use it for daily memory snapshots of my life and not for my fine art work. Today I’ve been feeling experimental so I’ve decided to blur the lines a little. The images below were all shot using my iPhone 4s and different Instagram filters. I took the time to light the images with Manfrotto’s LED lights. My hairdresser dropped by to do a bit of a “Bardot” cut for the shoot and I found the tools of her trade inspiring subjects. Yes I know I am very lucky to have my personal hairstylist coming over to my house…
