Top 5 Free Photography Apps for the iPhone

Despite their price-tag of $0, some of these are among the very best photography apps out there – indeed the reason they are able to be offered to you for nothing is because they have been designed by some of the richest corporations out there – like Microsoft.  Don't be fooled by the price – these are some excellent apps.  You may also want to be quick to download them – as some of them are only offered free for a limited time.

Instagram (free)

Famously bought by Facebook for the equivalent of one billion dollars (in shares), Instagram became so popular so quickly they now have over 50 million users – and the number is rising fast!

Essentially Instagram is another way of digitally altering photos to make them appear more interesting (arguably, to overcome some of the defects of phone cameras) – and thus more “sharable” on social media. Instagram has its own array of custom filters and effects, and of course, nothing could be easier than uploading your pictures to Facebook straight from the App!  Best of all – it’s free!

Snapseed (Occasionally Free)

Nik Software’s “Snapseed” has been voted both “Best Mobile Photo App 2012″ by TIPA (Technical Image Press Association), and “iPad App of the Year”.  Put simply it's an excellent image editor for the iPhone/iPad. Quite unlike editing with photoshop or similar desktop programs, it nevertheless has all the features you might expect – effects, filters, borders – all with a terrific degree of refinement to them, and all making clever use of the touchscreen interface.  It also has a sensational “Auto-correct” that seems perfectly calibrated – crucially it never seems to “correct” too far!

The latest version of the software has been updated to make the most of the retina display on the new iPad, and it's hard to find an editing app as good as this in the “paid” section of iTunes – making downloading this “free” app a complete no-brainer!

ng>(free)

Camwow is a very simple App, that performs a similar function to the “Photo booth” found on Apple computers.  It allows you to distort and stylise images in real time – before you even take the picture – providing hours of entertainment – as anyone who has used photobooth will know.  A whole host of new filters such as “X-ray” take the concept further, making this “free” app an obvious choice for downloading.

Flixel (free)

Flixel is an unusual App that allows you to “make photos come alive”.  Essentially it produces an animated gif image or “cinemagraph” – taking a rapid series of pictures that will allow you to animate your image.  The difference between Flixel and other Gif-producing Apps is that Flixel allows you to touch the screen of your device to choose an individual section of the image to animate – a very simple and easy to use process.  Ultimately this App won't replace any of your major photography apps, but it may provide some entertainment.

(p.s. If you’re looking for an iPad-specific cinemagraph / gif creator, paid app Echograph is worth considering)

Photosynth (free)

Techcrunch voted Photosynth the #2 app for the whole of 2011 – and it's not hard to see why.  Designed by Microsoft, Photosynth is a panorama creation app that allows you to capture and share interactive panoramas.  Crucially, as well as being able to take a traditional panorama where you spin around on a horizontal plane, Photosynth allows you to capture a full sphere.  This truly has to be seen to be believed – as it makes full use of the iPhone accelerometer like almost no other app.

Just as impressive as the app's ability to stitch the images together into a sphere, is the 'immersive viewer”, that allows you to zoom, pan and rotate your panorama by either swiping with your fingers, or using the accelerometer by moving your phone around as if you were viewing it in real life.  This is a truly astonishing piece of software that can't be recommended highly enough.
